Delta State
Commissioner for Higher Education, Hope Eghagha, was today kidnapped in a
deadly attack near Asaba, the capital of his home state.
A source learnt that the kidnappers shot and killed Mr. Eghagha’s police orderly before speeding off with the commissioner.
Mr. Eghagha, who
holds a PhD in English from the University of Lagos, was a senior
lecturer in the same university before accepting a commissionership in
the cabinet of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta.
For several years, Mr.
Eghagha wrote a column in the (Nigerian) Guardian and other newspapers.
He also served as a part-time member of the Guardian’s editorial board.
Delta state commissioner
of information, Chike Ogeah confirmed that Mr. Eghagha was kidnapped,
also a senior aide to Mr. Uduaghan told the source that his whereabouts
were still unknown. It was not clear whether the commissioner’s
kidnappers had made any contacts with Eghagha’s family.
